I've never been a super on trend person when it comes to fashion. I can't tell you what's in, I don't know all the terms, I'm just a mama of four trying my best to be comfy, while also looking put together. Like so many other mamas, I had a hard time organizing my closet. We practice a pretty minimalistic lifestyle, but for whatever reason, my closet overwhelmed me. EVERY. TIME.
I'd always leave my closet last when purging. Normally I start with one room and work my way through the house. Finally, when I made it to my closet, I would open the door only to close it again. I was completely overwhelmed. It felt like this massive feat that would never get accomplished. Don't get me wrong, like with all purging, it's something you constantly have to do. There's no one and done. BUT, I always felt like I never got anything done after going through my clothes.
I couldn't understand why I had all these (cute) clothes, that I never wore.
Enter...the Color Guru.
I first heard about Jeannie on a podcast years ago, but it wasn't until I listened to another podcast recently that I really felt like I got to know her. I connected with her message so much, that I reached out seeing if she would be interested in doing a collaboration. She was gracious enough to gift me my consultation.
Here are six things I learned when I got my color report back.
1. You'll feel much more confident
When I looked through the color palette she gave me, I immediately had to try it out. I pulled out ALL of my clothes, grabbed my color card and held up each piece of clothing to my face. I had a new set of eyes looking in the mirror. I could see the difference some colors had on my skin tone. What I love about the color report, is that she surrounds your picture with different colors and puts them side by side. You can actually SEE the difference in the photos. I feel so much more confident now that my closet is stocked with all the colors that compliment ME. I boxed up everything that wasn't in my color palette (or just didn't make me feel good) and donated it (okay, actually it's in a donation box in my garage still, BUT I plan to take it soon).
2. Getting dressed in the morning is so much easier
Gone are the days when I stood in front of my closet for what seemed like an eternity, just to grunt, throw on a tee and leggings, and call it done. Now that I know everything looks good on me AND goes together, I can just quickly pull an outfit together. Not only does this free up time in the morning (or night if you lay your clothes out the day before) but it also makes me feel better about myself (see previous point). I think this is especially important for mamas. We don't have a lot of time or energy to waste on things like getting dressed. Knowing I can look put together and comfy in no time flat is a HUGE win for me.
3. Shopping is streamlined
Now more than ever, people are trying to get in and out of stores as quickly as possible. With this pandemic, most people don't want to casually meander through a store. Having your color card with you while shopping, is like using the fast pass line at Disney. Quick, simple and efficient. I tested this out on my latest shopping trip. Card in hand, I zoomed through the store, completely avoiding colors I knew washed me out. You really have a whole new outlook on shopping when you know which colors look great on you vs. those that do the opposite. Another bonus? You save more money. You don't waste money on clothes you think are cute, but later find their way into that black hole of your closet. You know the one I'm talking about? That dark place in your closet that all those new (cute even) clothes go to die? Yea that one...
4. You'll be surprised how much you already know...
Before getting my colors done, there were some colors I just naturally stayed away from. On the flip side, I had some colors I was just naturally drawn too. Your gut is pretty smart. Some of my colors I wasn't surprised were on there, because I naturally leaned towards them. For example, white and orange. I LOVE white, I've always loved the way it looked on me. Whereas orange, I just never liked the way it looked on me.
5. ...but, you'll also be surprised about how much you didn't know
Some of the colors on my card I would've NEVER thought to try on. It was a bit out of my comfort zone to try new colors. BUT, I promise if you just trust the system you'll be so impressed. For example, pink. I never used to wear pink. In fact, at one point, I avoided it all together. When you look at my color palette though, there are TONS of pinks in it. Now, it's one of my favorite colors on me. Trust. The. System.
6. It makes your closet look so dang pretty
Okay, this point may seem silly, but my brain just lights up when I see my closet now. It just looks SO pretty. Seeing my color palette come to life, just brings me joy. I took a tip from my organization gals at The Home Edit, to organize by color. I follow the ROYGBIV (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet) model as best I could and it's been amazing!
Here's one of my favorite go to outfits!
