Well, it's that time of year again! It's the Marine Corps Birthday! We love to celebrate as a family and every year we have a tradition where I make (or get) a cake to celebrate. This year I made our cake and it was red velvet with cream cheese frosting. SO good and my favorite!
Marine Corps History
Having an American history degree, I nerd out about the history and traditions of the Marine Corps. So let's take a little stroll down history lane shall we?
The Marine Corps was founded on November 10, 1775 by the first Commandant of the Marine Corps, Major Samuel Nicholas. The United States Marine Corps is traced backed to the Continental Marines of the Revolutionary War. They were formed by a resolution of the Second Continental Congress. By December of 1775, Major Nicholas raised a battalion of 300 men by recruiting in Philadelphia, which was his home town. Tun Tavern is famously remembered as the birthplace of the Marine Corps, which is where the phrase "born in a bar" comes from.
At the end of the Revolutionary War, the Marines along with the Navy, were disbanded in April of 1783. It didn't last long though, because July 11, 1798 the Marines were resurrected by the United States Congress which created the United States Marine Corps we know today.
Throughout American History, Marines have played a role in protecting our nation.
Our Traditions
Birthday cake is a central part of the Marine Corps birthday. So every year I either make one myself or I grab one from the store. And depending on if Wes is home, he will actually cut it with his NCO sword! The kids LOVE it and think it's the coolest thing ever.
I'm proud to be a Marine wife, and to be able to be a part of this culture and tradition. It truly is an honor. So HAPPY BIRTHDAY to all you Devil Dogs out there!
Here are a few pics of our first two balls together circa 2014 and 2015!
